Shipping from Turkey to Mauritania: Which Options Work?

There are three practical ways to ship from Turkey to Mauritania: FCL/LCL container sea freight into Nouakchott or Nouadhibou, air freight out of Istanbul, and courier-express for small or urgent consignments. Cost depends on weight, volume, commodity, Incoterm and destination port; transit time depends on whether a direct service exists and where cargo is transshipped. This guide covers the cost drivers, transit logic, required documents and a worked cost simulation.

For a quick steer based on your dimensions and product, describe your shipment on Dexpell.ai Chat and we will narrow down the right mode together.

Sea Freight: FCL and LCL Options

Mauritania's main sea gateway is the Autonomous Port of Nouakchott (Port de l'Amitié); Nouadhibou in the north is the second key port, linked to mining and fishing. Turkish containers typically load at Mersin, Izmir (Aliağa/Nemrut), Ambarlı or Gemlik and reach Mauritania via Mediterranean, North European, Tangier or West African transshipment hubs. A direct Turkey–Nouakchott sailing cannot be assumed; services vary by carrier and season.

FCL (20' or 40') suits single-consignee cargo; LCL consolidation suits loads that do not fill a container, though consolidation and transshipment steps can lengthen total time. Construction materials, ceramics, furniture, food, machinery and textiles are typical cargo groups on this lane.

Air Freight and Courier-Express

The Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs notes that Turkish Airlines serves Nouakchott; current schedules and cargo capacity change over time and should be confirmed at booking. Dexpell plans airline capacity through its IATA cargo agent status in Turkey. Air freight fits palletised, heavy or high-volume commercial cargo; courier-express fits documents, samples, spare parts and small urgent parcels. See our Courier & Express service page for general information.

What Determines the Cost of Shipping from Turkey to Mauritania?

Key drivers: origin city and loading port, container type (20'/40'/40'HC) or air chargeable weight, commodity (dangerous, temperature-controlled or out-of-gauge), Incoterm (EXW, FOB, CIF, DAP, DDP), number of transshipments, carrier surcharges (fuel, security, peak season), terminal and demurrage charges, inland trucking on both ends, customs handling and insurance.

Air chargeable weight is the greater of actual and volumetric weight. The volumetric divisor is 5000 for courier/express and 6000 for air freight.

Market Average Freight Rates (Not a Dexpell Price)

Air freight (market average): According to WorldACD, in week 41 (5–11 October 2026) the global average spot air cargo rate was USD 3.55 per kg, and the full-market average including contract rates was USD 3.13 per kg (source: The STAT Times, 19 October 2026). These are global averages; the actual Turkey–Nouakchott rate can differ significantly depending on routing, capacity and cargo type.

Ocean freight: We could not find a reliable, dated and sourced container average for the Turkey–Mauritania lane, so we do not quote a number. Pricing on this lane depends on carrier offers, the transshipment port and seasonal surcharges, and is only fixed by a current quotation.

For an exact price use Dexpell.ai.

Transit Time: Port-to-Port vs Door-to-Door

We do not promise fixed day counts because time depends on the service, transshipment point and season. Think in three legs: pickup, export clearance and delivery to the port or airport in Turkey; the main leg (sea or air); and discharge, import clearance and inland delivery in Mauritania. Sea freight delays come from transshipment and sailing frequency, air freight delays from connections and capacity, and both from missing documents or customs checks. Air is generally much faster than sea; the exact schedule depends on the plan at booking.

Worked Cost Simulation

1) Chargeable weight example

Courier/express (divisor 5000): a carton of 60 × 50 × 40 cm weighing 18 kg: 60×50×40 = 120,000 cm³ ÷ 5000 = 24 kg volumetric weight. Because it exceeds actual weight, the chargeable weight is 24 kg. Dexpell has no defined courier-express rate for Mauritania yet, so we show no price for this lane; the cost is set by a current quotation.

Air freight (divisor 6000): a pallet of 120 × 100 × 120 cm weighing 180 kg: 1,440,000 cm³ ÷ 6000 = 240 kg volumetric; chargeable weight 240 kg. As pure arithmetic only, applying the global spot average above (USD 3.55/kg) gives 240 × 3.55 ≈ USD 852. This is not a quote; the real lane rate may differ, and surcharges, duties and taxes are excluded.

2) Destination duty and tax (landed cost) example

Import charges in Mauritania consist of customs duty, a statistical tax and VAT (TVA). We could not access the official customs authority's page for this article; the rates below come from secondary sources and must be confirmed with your customs broker before shipping: duty bands of 0%, 5%, 13% and 20% (Goodhope Freight, undated), a 1% statistical tax, and a general VAT rate of 16% (Kintsugi, October 2026; the Kreston VAT guide also states 16% but mentions 15% elsewhere). Because the VAT base could not be verified, the example assumes CIF value + duty + statistical tax.

Example: a consignment with a CIF value of USD 10,000. (a) At the 20% band: duty 2,000; statistical tax 100; VAT base 12,100; VAT (16%) 1,936; total taxes USD 4,036; landed cost about USD 14,036. (b) At the 5% band: duty 500; statistical tax 100; VAT base 10,600; VAT 1,696; total taxes USD 2,296; landed cost about USD 12,296. The band depends on your HS code. Required Documents and Customs Clearance

According to the US Department of Commerce guide (trade.gov, February 2026), Mauritania import documentation includes a commercial invoice, a bill of lading (or certificate of origin) and an SGS inspection certificate; large payments are usually by confirmed letter of credit or bank transfer. The actual document set varies by product, so confirm the HS code, packing list, certificate of origin and any product-specific permits with the consignee's customs broker before shipment. Do not ship restricted goods before verifying the current prohibited and restricted list.

In Turkey, Dexpell coordinates export declaration, commercial invoice and packing list; in Mauritania the consignee or local agent handles import clearance. If you need an importer-of-record structure, see our Importer of Record service article.

Delivery Gateways and Coverage

Nouakchott is the main entry point by both port and Nouakchott-Oumtounsy International Airport; Nouadhibou is the second port city on the northern coast. Deliveries beyond the capital need separate inland trucking planning.

What Dexpell Handles on This Lane

Pickup in Turkey, export customs coordination, FCL/LCL and air freight booking, coordination with the destination agent, door-delivery planning and cargo insurance options. DAP or DDP structures are assessed per shipment.
